Phrase: Break the ice Meaning: To start a conversation; to do something so that everybody feels at home.
Examples:
I told her that her eyes were beautiful to break the ice, and start a conversation with her.
When Margaret saw how boring the party was, she told some blue jokes to break the ice.
Everybody was bored stiff, so he suggested playing football to break the ice.
