Phrase: In the red Meaning: If someone is in the red, he or she owes more money than he or she has. The opposite is in the black.
Examples:
I can lend you any money because I am in the red. Ask Martha. I am sure she will be in the black.
My bank account is in the red, so I cannot spend any money until next month.
This is the first time in ten years that my bank account has been in the black. Subject: Money
